Growing up, I've always had cats, but recently I'm starting to wish my wife and I could get a dog (no not the one in the pic)

Dogs; hands down. They evolved to live with and protect humans, and are an excellent alarm system and burglary deterrent.
Cats, however, only deign to live with us because we're too big to eat.
